Easy Ways to Keep Your Home Smelling Fresh

Keeping your home smelling fresh benefits your well-being.  No one likes to come home to the smell of wet dog, last nights dinner or smelly socks.  The definition of a good smell varies for everyone.  Some prefer fresh scents, others like spicy scents, and some love the clean smell of bleach.

Routine cleaning is essential to reducing unpleasant smells.  Regular cleaning, removing clutter, preventing leaks, and emptying bins frequently help keep your home smelling lovely.  Adding fragrance masks the problem temporarily but doesn’t solve the root cause.

Here are a few ways to add your favourite scent to your home and keep it smelling fresh.

Potpourri

Potpourri adds a decorative look to bowls and scents a room.  Make your own by drying flowers, citrus peel, and other natural materials for a few weeks.  Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil and refresh as needed.

Light a Candle or Wax Melt

Lighting a candle or wax melt gives an instant burst of fragrance and a warm, ambient glow.  Check out my wax melts for appealing fragrances: Wax Melts.

Room Spray

Room sprays are great for quickly freshening up a room. They’re useful when your home needs an extra boost of scent. Whether you’ve made something smelly for dinner or it’s too cold to open the windows, room sprays can help.

Open Windows

Let your home breathe by opening windows during the warmer months.  A well-ventilated home is less likely to have lingering odours from mildew or dampness.

Deodorise with Bicarbonate of Soda

Bicarbonate of soda absorbs odours around your home.  Place a bowl in your fridge to soak up unpleasant smells.  Freshen mattresses, fabric sofas and rugs by sprinkling bicarbonate generously.  Allow it to sit for a few minutes then vacuum up the excess.

Set up a Reed Diffuser

Reed Diffusers are great for long-term fragrance.  Place them in high-traffic areas to circulate the scent frequently.  Check out my Reed Diffusers: Reed Diffusers

Have Plenty of Indoor Plants

Indoor plants are natural air purifiers.  They filter toxins and carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen into your space.

Make Your Own Scented Sachets

Scented sachets are great for confined spaces like wardrobes, shoe cupboards, and drawers.  They keep clothes smelling fresh and deter insects.  Make your own by drying fragrant flowers or herbs like lavender.  Place them in a muslin or organza bag and hang them up.  Refresh from time to time with some of your favourite essential oils.

Make a Simmer Pot

Simmer pots make your home smell inviting.  Fill a small saucepan with water, rosemary sprigs, whole black peppercorns, thinly sliced lemon, and a few drops of vanilla extract.  Simmer over a low heat and enjoy the scent.  Adjust the ingredients as desired.

Get Baking

The smell of freshly baked bread, biscuits, or cakes is comforting and uplifting.  Baking at home is an instant pick-me-up.
