Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils: Key Differences Explained
Do you know the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?
In this blog post, I’ll explain what each one is and highlight their differences.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils come from different parts of plants, such as fruit skins, flowers, leaves, twigs, and bark. These concentrated plant extracts retain the natural smell and flavour, or ‘essence’, of their source.
Producers obtain essential oils through distillation (using steam and/or water) or mechanical methods like cold pressing. After extraction they combine the aromatic chemicals with a carrier oil to create a product ready for use.
What are Fragrance Oils?
Fragrance oils consist of both natural and synthetic aroma chemicals. Skilled chemists and perfumers create these oils, often blending them to meet specific customer requirements.
Many fragrance oils used in home fragrances and soap contain a mixture of natural essential oil extracts and synthetic aroma chemicals. These blends can produce thousands of unique, safe, and interesting fragrances.
Nature Identical Oils are lab created oils with the same chemical structure as naturally occurring fragrance compounds.
Conclusion
Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe. Essential oils are generally considered safe, but they may cause serious side effects for some people or pets.
Both essential oils and fragrance oils are safe to use in your home. The choice between them depends on your preference.
